Time was when admitting a love for EA’s FIFA series was akin to a horrific social faux pas, like unknowingly chatting up your mate’s sister or walking out of the toilet undone and hanging out. It was bad news and would generally secure a reputation for being either: a) weird b) stupid or worse still just “a bit special”. Why? Because, compared to Konami’s deep and frenetic competitor, FIFA was shallow, gimmicky and ponderous. However, much to the developer’s credit, FIFA 07 marked a significant step forward for the series. Finally, after many a year of bizarre new control schemes, here was a game that was comfortable concentrating on being just one thing: a really good football game.

It’s a sobering thought that we’re already on our third Tiger Woods on the Xbox 360 – I guess we’re way past the point where we can talk about Microsoft’s breakdown-prone box as a next-generation console, and also past the point where we can get too excited about the usual annual franchise updates. Tiger Woods 06 bought the franchise into the HD era, but as several courses and plenty of content had gone missing in the transition from the PS2 and PC versions, it felt like a bit of a rush-job.

Fans of golf history will love the new mode, but most gamers today probably prefer to play as teenage Tiger Woods instead of a lot of old white guys they've never heard of. While PGA Tour 14 might not be as exciting as the last couple of years' versions, it is a more technically proficient and streamlined game, giving you access to the more exciting features of the game. And for online golfers, the Country Clubs and Connected Tournaments are the best this series has ever had.

I recommend Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 to those who just want something quick at home. Or those who can't see themselves air-punching or dancing in a group class. It's great for a quick morning burn, beating the cold winter months, or a gym trip that is too far away or expensive to be motivating. There's a solid fitness experience here and you'll see results. I would have liked to see more virtual games and variety. In a bit of reverse irony, it's something that has a place in gyms of the future. This virtual, block-breaking environment is the kind of activity that has the most potential. The standard training is great, but it's not new and it's not doing much more than watching instructional videos would. The product shines most when it combines a virtual distractions with true, calorie-burning benefits.

NCAA Football is hitting the glass ceiling of this console cycle. The gameplay itself is better and more refined each time the game is released, but when it’s surrounded by dated visuals, dated audio, dated modes, what’s a fan to do? There’s a good football game here, but it’s far from an impressive package.

NHL 15 is a tough game to size up. I truly do believe that gameplay is king, and it's there that NHL 15 shines brightly. It plays extremely well, whether online or offline, proving why EA Sports' long-running series has been the king of the ice for over 20 years. But there needs to be a reason to keep playing, and it's there that NHL 15 falls short and feels somewhat vacant. The jump to new-gen hardware has left behind a host of missing features and options that we had last year, and that's simply not acceptable. A barebones Practice Mode, no Season Mode, gutted GM Mode and Be A Pro Mode, no Winter Classic, and missing online features are just as easy to count as what's still there, and that's troubling. NHL 15 is a blast to play, but it doesn’t have the staying power I expect.
