Desperados 3 is an uncompromising tactical stealth game that tests your patience and rewards your willingness to experiment. Playing with a charming team of toy soldier-sized assassins in a series of deadly and detailed dioramas is tough and requires a lot of trial and error, but success is more rousing than a whiskey chaser. Dormant for 14 years, in Desperados 3 the series enjoys the most triumphant comeback in the Western genre since Clint Eastwood made Unforgiven.

In fighting games you can’t easily pass the buck on who’s to blame for losing like in team-based games like Dota 2 and CSGO. If you lose in a fighting game it’s because you messed up. This is a potentially huge hurdle to overcome mentally before you even begin to approach how to play. And while Granblue Fantasy Versus isn’t necessarily going to help you over that hurdle, if you can get through it, the game does a great job of helping you understand how to get better.

Though it probably won't win new fans, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a polished dose of more of the same high-octane FPS action that series loyalists have come to expect.

Pac-Man Championship Edition was a masterclass in how to take a classic game and fit it into a modern template. It kept what people loved about the original but made it faster, more compelling and borderline addictive. Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 walks a similar line, and while it may do a little too much for its own good, is yet another excellent addition to the franchise.

Aside from its creative hats and hat-based abilities, A Hat in Time never exactly feels like an inventive platformer. But it does its job well, even while suffering from the occasionally awkward camera issues that 3D platformers are often known for. It stands out, though, for its infectious and endearingly goofy personality, its creative and widely different levels, and its enjoyable platforming. And, of course, all those hats.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is a beautiful game where your decisions really matter, but it's mostly the same as Seasons 1 and 2.

WWE 2K17 doesn’t make any big, drastic changes, but its smart gameplay tweaks have revitalized match types I’d ignored the past few years. I really miss 2K Showcase, and 2K17 is still weak in areas that I feel should have been shored up by now, but its excellent combat, and generous amounts of customization help it retain its title.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X is a strangely catchy, thoroughly Japanese rhythm game that's a blast to play, even if you don't quite understand what a vocaloid is.
