Tales of Vesperia is a strong anime-style Japanese RPG with a wide- ranging story, compelling characters and an intense real-time battle system that keeps you on your toes. Although it has a somewhat inconsistent visual style and is relatively low on graphical details, the character designs and animations are very good, and there’s a ton to explore in the world. The storyline isn’t breaking any new ground and begins to unravel somewhat at the end, but there’s power here, and the characters will definitely stay with you after the battle ends.

DNF Duel’s simplified inputs make it a great game for beginners to pick up, press a few buttons, and get right into the action. However, that simplicity doesn’t mean it isn’t also a great game to play online after you really understand the complex mechanics underneath those inputs and how any two characters interact with one another. Getting from that first point to the second may dissolve into a series of frustrating knowledge checks until you learn the hard way what you can and can’t do, but on the other side of the grind is a fun fighting game with enough hidden depth to hopefully sustain a player base that thrives on continued discovery.

Alan Wake Remastered shines a flattering light on one of the Xbox 360’s most beloved games, which is now available for PlayStation users to enjoy for the very first time. If you’re a returning visitor to the town of Bright Falls or fancy delving into the darkness to find out what all the fuss is about, don’t sleep on Alan Wake Remastered. Now, how about that sequel, Remedy?

Scarlet Nexus is yet another great game from Bandai Namco Studios. Its satisfying combat keeps things interesting, even in the early parts of the story when the plot feels dry. You’re in for a great ride with Scarlet Nexus.

Persona 5 Strikers isn't a Dynasty Warriors game with a coat of Persona paint slapped on it. It's a Persona game that cleverly incorporates Dynasty Warriors combat into its systems. The shift to more action-focused gameplay works extremely well.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an ambitious and deeply enjoyable RPG that evokes comforting comparisons to the good old days of Fallout and Deus Ex. With great graphics, immersive simulator systems, and gripping quest design, you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck here if you can look past some of the game’s unfortunate mechanical missteps.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a return to typical Treyarch form with a promising Zombies mode and old-school multiplayer outing, backed up by excellent visuals that make full use of the next-gen consoles. Especially with the handy immersion of the PS5's DualSense, this year's Call of Duty is well worth grabbing to flesh out your next-gen games collection. Just watch out for the mediocre campaign and some performance issues.

Splitting through a forest at ten-tenths, the sun above piercing through the foliage and the gravel below assaulting your undercarriage, WRC 9 is some of the finest rally racing you can find. Career mode missteps and AI concerns notwithstanding, WRC 9’s incredible stage design and satisfying handling model do make it very easy to recommend to series first-timers – but I’d wager many WRC 8 veterans will find the improvements here fairly incremental after last year’s big leap.
