The ADATA Legend 850, a budget-priced PCI Express 4.0 SSD, won't win any speed awards, but its performance is fine for everyday use, it has exceptional durability ratings, and it boasts AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption.

The Sabrent Rocket 2230 is a fast and efficient M.2 2230 SSD. This makes it a great option for the Steam Deck and other mobile platforms like Microsoft’s Surface. It is limited to 1TB and costs more than M.2 2280 alternatives, but is backed by a known brand.

Samsung's SSD 990 Pro is a zippy PCI Express 4.0 internal drive that's a step up from its predecessor, offering excellent performance for creative tasks, if not necessarily for gaming.

The Acer GM7000 is excellent on the whole, but it can’t quite catch the very best. If priced right, this is a good drive, particularly at 2TB. It balances performance and efficiency nicely with reasonable support, but it does not particularly stand out.

The Crucial P3 takes the P3 Plus’s formula and applies it to a PCIe 3.0 interface. It’s fast enough to rival older 3.0 drives and has higher capacity options at a good price. It is also very efficient and cool-running with a sufficient warranty. This would make a good secondary drive for any machine.

The HP FX900 isn't the fastest PCI Express 4.0 solid-state drive on the block, but this M.2 model puts up solid (and, in some cases, excellent) numbers at a surprisingly moderate price.

The Silicon Power UD90 is an excellent budget PCIe 4.0 SSD. Performance is competitive with similar drives and is more than enough for the average user. Basic software support and a good warranty are coupled with reasonable pricing, making it a good choice for builds that don’t need a lot of capacity.

The Patriot P400 is a strong, mid-range PCIe 4.0 that’s suitable for both the PS5 and PCs. It shows that a reasonably-priced DRAM-less drive with a powerful SSD controller and good flash can be fast without compromise.

The 1TB HP FX900 is a mid-range PCIe 4.0 SSD that generally exceeds expectations and proves that “DRAM-less” is no longer a bad word. It’s plenty fast and affordable but isn't perfect.

If you're seeking extreme PCIe 4.0 performance and high capacity, you now have a real option — if you can afford it. The Rocket 4 Plus at 8TB is envelope-pushing with TLC flash and, despite some performance hiccups, it's the fastest 8TB SSD we've tested.
