The racing in Need for Speed Payback is fun. The open world is a decent size without being so huge it gets annoying. The visuals are great, even if the scenery itself is a little bit forgettable. And there are the outright bad bits: the awful upgrade system and the time-limited police chases. Ultimately, there’s nothing outstanding or innovative enough here: it feels too much like the designers took a bunch of features from other racing games, threw them all into Payback and added a few Hollywood action sequences.

While its heroes are looking for the title’s payback, EA’s racing series is in desperate need of a comeback. It’s now years since Need for Speed last dominated the Christmas games charts, and Ghost Games’ previous efforts – Need for Speed: Rivals and plain Need for Speed – did nothing to put the series back on top.

Need for Speed Payback is a big, competent, and confident arcade racer but it’s really let down by its linear cop chases, its overwrought and insidious upgrade system, its dreadful dialogue, and its superficial action sequences. It feels fine and it looks flashy, but Payback really went all-in on its direct-to-DVD revenge tale and it was a bust for me.
