Far Cry 5 is another wide-open playground with all the necessary ingredients for causing a real ruckus: loads of enemies and allies, temperamental wildlife, and plenty of explosions. Amidst all the insanity it manages to tell a serious story with respectable characters and a powerful ending, though it’s not the most memorable in the series. The successful transition from exotic locales to America’s backyard makes me excited to see where the Far Cry formula goes next.

Far Cry 5 takes the game's vaunted first-person shooter antics and brings them to a fictional America for the first time in the series.

Far Cry 5 offers a fun, vivid take on rural Americana, but doesn’t dig into the questions its setting raises.

Far Cry 5 is a rollercoaster of emotions; from the sheer adrenaline of the gameplay, to the psychological trauma resulted from the most disturbing underlings in the series’ history. Much like a pilgrimage, the initial trials and tribulations are very difficult, but as things progress it becomes significantly less so. A hugely enjoyable experience, even if it’s certainly got a few pacing and open-world teething issues to address.

Every Far Cry begins with an escape, and Far Cry 5 is no different. However, here there’s a sense that it’s not just our hero, the Deputy, who’s escaping Eden Gate’s cult maniacs, but the series trying to escape its limitations. Far Cry 5 is running both from the ghosts of Far Crys past and the even more terrifying spectre of the ‘Ubigame’ – that cynical internet theory that all Ubisoft games are essentially the same.
