Seagate’s IronWolf Pro is a solid choice for NAS and workstations and includes free data recovery coverage for three years, while the Exos X20 slots in with higher workload and reliability ratings for servers and surveillance systems. Both drives maximize capacity with no significant performance compromises but come at a premium for the highest-capacity 20TB models.

The Seagate FireCuda HDD is a nice, affordable solution if you need up to 8TB of high-performance HDD storage. Performance is not hindered by spindle speed or recording technology, and Seagate backs the drive with a decent warranty.

The 20TB Seagate SkyHawk AI HDD is an excellent storage solution for video recording and processing. It’s plenty fast and capable for even a large number of streams and has three years of data recovery. However, it is pricey and essentially an Exos X20 at its core.

The 14TB IronWolf Pro is an all-around solid NAS hard drive with satisfactory to good performance and an excellent warranty. It’s not the best drive for a desktop PC, but it will do if you need a lot of capacity.

The WD Blue HDD is an affordable entry-level HDD. It’s not as fast as 7200-RPM options but uses faster CMR tech than the SMR tech we see in competing 5400-RPM-class drives. The Blue has an industry-standard (but lackluster) two-year warranty and is an inexpensive way of installing more storage in your system.

The OptiNAND-enabled WD Red Pro NAS line of high-capacity hard drives (HDDs) offers a compelling way to hit up to 22TB without having to use SMR technology. Performance is as expected, but you still have to pay more for this much storage in a single drive.

The WD Red Plus is a cheaper, slower version of the Red Pro with a shorter warranty. It trades performance for quiet operation which yields relatively poor performance for its specifications, but it is still useful for NAS.

The Toshiba X300 brings high storage capacity to the desktop without SMR or RPM compromises. Unfortunately, this comes at a higher price, and its performance is also underwhelming.

The Seagate BarraCuda is one of the least expensive drives you can get, but it suffers from its use of SMR technology. This drive is useful for specific workloads, but alternatives with faster CMR technology are available at similar pricing.
