The Dell Latitude 7389 is a business-oriented 2-in-1 laptop with a sturdy, if conventional, black chassis and solid Core i7 power. Its chief differentiator in a crowded market is disappointing battery life.

The Asus Chromebook Flip C101PA is a capable and likable convertible, but you'll find yourself squinting and zooming to read its 10.1-inch screen and typing gingerly on its downsized keyboard.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 11 is an 11.6-inch convertible that offers keyboard, touch, and stylus input, runs Chrome OS and Android apps, and shrugs off knocks, drops, and water spills. It's the best chromebook we've seen for kids.

The R11 is a decent, if unspectacular device. Having the option to position it in a variety of modes is fun, but the sometimes sluggish performance makes it hard to recommend to anyone who wants to do more than a couple of simultaneous tasks. If your needs are light and you value the flexible hinges though, it’s a nice machine all the same, but we’d still opt to wait for the 4GB alternative.

HP's Dragonfly Pro is a pretty laptop that shops with a year of 24/7 on-demand support. HP says it's aimed at non-tech-savvy freelancers. But starting at $1,399 and weighing over 3.5 pounds, it doesn't seem particularly well suited to on-the-go users in the often cash-strapped world of the gig economy.

The Dell Inspiron 13 5000 tells you larger convertible laptops have truly entered the mainstream. It’s reasonably affordable, still looks good and has the roughly the same power as some laptops costing way over £1000. Down sides include that the screen isn’t as colourful as the best and that the casing is made of plastic rather than something fancy like aluminium or a magnesium alloy. Oddly enough, though, it actually fits in well among its more stylish peers.

Even though the Microsoft Surface Go 3 has a colorful screen and a solid design, it is hard to recommend it because of performance and battery problems. We would rather have a Surface Go 2 than this new one.

Samsung is pushing a new vision for what a Chrome OS product can be: a premium device for power users. But its battery life leaves much to be desired, and it’s just not good enough to cost $1,000.

Priced well under $1,000, HP's Pavilion x360 14 is a Core i5 convertible for the masses—and something of a pleasant surprise, although a 128GB SSD is pretty thin nowadays.
