Although a disjointed plot and weak protagonist make it slow to get started, being pursued through an intriguingly bizarre world by plentiful and disturbing monsters kept my palms sweaty and my heart in my throat thanks to a strict adherence to the most important survival horror rule: you should always be on the back foot.

The more you play The Evil Within 2, the clearer it becomes that horror and open-world game design don’t mix. Not just bashing heads, but magnetically repelling each other – one is all about imposing tight control over the player and environment, the other about empowering the player by removing that control.

The Evil Within 2 is a game that wants to be a few different things: survival horror, mind-bending surrealism, action-adventure, and open-world exploration. It sounds like an unwieldy mix, but against the odds the game seems to hold it all together – though you’ll have to wait for our final review to find out if that lasts the duration.
