The new S8 and S8 Plus aren't perfect, but they are damn close

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is the best smartphone available, full stop. It has raised the bar for top-end smartphone design, is one of the most future-proofed phones you can buy and squeezes a large selection of cutting-edge technology into a consumer-friendly package that anyone can use.

Samsung has taken the best phone around and made it even better with an impressive Infinity screen and premium design. It ticks a shedload of boxes – as you’d expect from a flagship. It’s one of the best phones of 2017, and is nearly half the price of the iPhone X. But the biometrics are a let down. If you want a slightly larger screen and battery, then the S8+ also gets our approval. Though now, the OnePlus 5T offers staunch competition on specs and price.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a very good value because of its captivating infinity display, strong performance and long battery life for under $500.

The large, bezel-less display is truly iconic and beautiful, and the screen quality excellent. The fingerprint scanner being placed on the back is a poor decision from Samsung, as well as the iris scanner / facial recognition not working well enough to be a real consideration. However, these aren’t deal breakers, and the improved battery life and tweaked camera will be among the best you’ll find.

With the two now coming in at much the same price Samsung is the clear winner in this pairing. Though the Nokia 8 boasts a dual-camera, Samsung’s single-lens offering is fantastic in its own right. Core hardware is similar, but Samsung wins on design – especially with its gorgeous Infinity Display. Unless you are a content creator who will make great use of Ozo and the Dual-Sight Zeiss cameras, we can’t see why you would choose the Nokia 8 over the Galaxy S8.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 is a touch faster than the Galaxy S8, but much more expensive. Buy the Note 8 over the S8 Plus only if you’ll use its S Pen stylus and dual-camera, since the difference in screen size and battery capacity is negligible.

Still an excellent phone with a great camera, lovely design and a fantastic display. It's not the Samsung flagship anymore, but don't let that put you off.

The S8 is a sizeable improvement over the S7 in almost every area, but the camera has received the fewest upgrades – on paper, at least. There’s no dual-sensor system here, no wide-angle lens or variable aperture. Instead, there’s a single 12-megapixel sensor behind a wide f/1.7 lens that uses the same Dual Pixel tech as the S7.

Under the stunning body is a serious amount of power, although where you live in the world will determine the SoC (system-on-chip) at the heart of the device. Brits, and those in Europe and Asia, will get Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chipset, while folk in the USA will get a device with the

The biggest concern I had about the Samsung Galaxy S8 was the battery life. Considering the fallout from trying to cram a big battery inside the slim Note 7, it’s probably no surprise that Samsung has been a little conservative with the cell inside the Galaxy S8.
