The Surface Go 2 has a bigger screen, longer battery life and better performance than its predecessor, though you need to prepare to exit budget territory to get one of the better configurations.

The Surface Go 2, Microsoft’s new tiny Windows 10 tablet, comes in two configurations: one is slow and starts at $500 with the keyboard, and the other is a little faster and starts at $730 with the keyboard. It’s adorable, but Intel’s processors hold it back.

The Microsoft Surface Go 2 is an excellent affordable Windows 10 tablet that features a premium design found in the company's more expensive devices. It offers a slight bump in performance over the original, but it is still rather underpowered – especially the base model. Once you start kitting it out with improved internals and essential add-ons like the Type Cover, the price starts to climb.

The new Surface Go is a compelling second-generation device, but question marks remain over its long-term suitability for productivity, particularly on the baseline Intel Pentium Gold model.

When you look at the Go 2 through the lens of what it's designed for, it's clear that Microsoft has done a fantastic job. The slight display increase, reliable performance and small footprint make it a fun device to use, be it on the kitchen counter as you walk through a new recipe, or while sitting outside doing damage control on your inbox. Most people will want to skip the $399 entry-level model with its slower processor and slower storage, opting instead for the $549 configuration. For someone who’s looking to get a full Windows 10 device in a compact 2-in-1, the Go 2 makes for a compelling option.
