Samsung 850 Pro 512GB

SK Hynix is already showing what it is capable of doing. Armed with LAMD IP and NAND flash production, the company can be a major player in the SSD market. 2D planar NAND is on the way out, so Hynix will need to ramp up 3D production to take on Samsung with equal footing.

PROS

+ The SK Hynix Canvas SC300 delivers mainstream performance for near entry-level SSD prices. The heavy-workload performance is better than that of many mainstream SSD products currently on the market. The five-year warranty is a nice addition, and it matches the 850 EVO's warranty but not its endurance rating.

CONS

- The low 72TBW rating is half that of the Samsung 850 EVO, but the price doesn't represent the shortcoming.

Even though the PNY CS2211 XLR8 SSDs outshine other S10-based products on the market today, they still do not compete well against the Samsung 850 EVO. PNY will need to lower the price to make the CS2211 more attractive to consumers shopping for the best overall value.

The latest flagship SSD from Samsung is a high-end drive that’s designed to smash performance barriers thanks to some innovative new technology – a sign of what’s possible when one firm controls its whole production line.

The 850 Pro got off to a reasonable start in the AS SSD benchmarks. Its sequential read and write speeds of 520MB/s and 498MB/s are among the best we’ve seen – only the SanDisk beats its in the former test. Samsung’s drive excelled in AS SSD’s small file tests, too; its 4K read speed of 38MB/s is the best we’ve seen, and only one other drive beats its pace in the write test.
