Starlink: Battle for Atlas

With or without the unnecessary toys, Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a commendable space adventure. Even with the repetitive grind and randomly scattershot space combat, this is a great-looking, gratifying game of strategic action and environmental exploration. Switch owners are undoubtedly the winners, but there’s something here to enjoy on any platform.

There’s a lot working in Starlink’s favour though. For one, it launches with no real competition in that field, with all of its former potential competition dormant or discontinued. For another, it aims for a slightly older audience, meaning it can capture the attention of kids who grew up with the likes of Skylanders as well as older players who may be drawn into its deeper story and sci-fi trappings.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a fun, arcade-y revival of the spaceship shooter that’s been filled out with a lot of extra open world stuff – both the good and the bad. The big question mark is how much game you really get if you don’t fork out for the extra toys – but for old-school fans who own a Switch, this could well be the closest we ever get to Star Fox on Switch, and that’s a big sell for some.
