I've been longing for a laptop like the Blade for years — a machine with a modern design and premium materials that isn't dominated by its gaming identity. A device capable of running Crysis or Battlefield with ease but portable enough to slip effortlessly into a small bag. The Blade meets or exceeds most of these criteria, but its lackluster display and high cost prevent it from achieving perfection.

Having only launched its first gaming laptop in 2012, Razer is still cutting its teeth in the PC systems space, but it's innovating rapidly. The 2014 Blade not only represents a significant evolutionary leap over last year's model, but a commendable attempt to push the entire category forward. And while the company's ambition is commendable, the Blade would have been better off with a more practical display to deliver better performance and a more attractive price.
