Torn between the Dell XPS 15 and Apple MacBook Pro? Your decision gets more complicated with the arrival of Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Extreme, a deluxe desktop replacement with a sensational Dolby Vision HDR screen.

ThinkPads are the most durable and recognizable business machines on the market, and they have been for 25 years. Most of the X1 Extreme’s aesthetics borrow from that heritage. Still, can a $3,000 (as configured) laptop be as compelling as consumer options?

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme is a nice laptop to grab going into 2022. Quirks aside, it’s an excellent, professional-looking laptop with a lot of horsepower and a portable format for its size. If you’re the type that has to do serious work in an office but you're also a closet gamer, this could be the laptop to keep up your reputation. It’s not all perfect though – no laptop is, and I'll get in-depth on all the pros and quirks of this series in the review down below.

The X1 Extreme is an excellent all-round notebook. It merges the fundamentals of the ThinkPad line, like the solid craftsmanship, the clean aesthetics, the fast keyboard, and the proper IO, with powerful hardware, a compelling cooling solution that keeps the hardware at bay, and a good-quality UHD screen with wide-gamut color coverage. It's not without its quirks, but besides the fairly short battery life of the UHD configurations, most of them are rather minor or subjective. The X1 Extreme is however more expensive than the competition, and we can only hope Lenovo got their quality control in check this time around.

This is one expensive laptop, but many might willingly pay the price for this beautifully engineered and designed machine. If you want desktop-level power with portability in a robust package, the X1 Extreme is built for exactly that.
