The MateBook X would be an impressive laptop under any circumstances – the fact that it’s Huawei’s first just makes it even more so. Huawei has definitely nailed the design and build quality, while the keyboard is also impressively tactile for such a thin machine. The price might be a barrier for some consumers, but if you’re in the market for an ultrabook then Huawei has instantly earned the right to be in the running.

The craftsmanship and build quality, the lightweight and compact form-factor, the good-quality 3:2 touchscreen, the inputs or the fine audio for this size, all push the Huawei MateBook X laptop above many of its peers in the premium Windows ultrabook segment. But despite all these, this is merely a niche product meant for a tight segment of potential buyers once you also factor in its main quirks: the performance, battery life, and cost.

If Huawei would be able to get a handle on the high power consumption and with that the low battery life, the innovative MateBook X would come another step closer to a 90% rating. It speaks for itself that despite all that, it achieves an overall rating of 87%, which is still great.

This laptop’s a curious one in the performance stakes.Laptop makers tend to choose Intel Core i Y-series processors (such as the Core i7-7Y75) for fanless laptops because these ultra low-power chips are made for short bursts of performance and low power consumption.

The Huawei MateBook X is one of the best Windows 10 ultrabooks available. It’s thin, light, has a great screen, great speakers, good keyboard, solid trackpad, brilliant fingerprint sensor and gets all the basics right. It’s also fanless despite having a full, U-series Core i5 or i7 processor, making it completely silent but with full laptop power.
