Next-gen components and a new, bigger primary display make this the best Zephyrus Duo model yet, with great performance and a vibrant pair of screens plus some of the best speakers we’ve seen in a gaming laptop.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 is a niche laptop that makes the most sense for gamers already committed to a two-screen life. It performs well overall and can render modern games at max settings, but when a laptop with an RTX 4080 can perform nearly as well or better, it really makes you question the overall value. But that has been the story for RTX 4090 laptops in general so far, and what the Duo 16 does, it does well. Still, it’s not a laptop I would recommend for most people. Unless you absolutely love the idea of an integrated second screen and are willing to live with the trade-offs to achieve it, it’s best to look elsewhere.

Two years later and the second display of the Duo 16 feels like it has more of a purpose than it did before. Maybe that’s because the way I use a computer has changed, or perhaps it’s because it just took some time for it to make sense. It’s hard to recommend anyone go out and spend $4,000 on a gaming laptop, but if you’re in the market for a device that feels futuristic and provides a different experience, then the Duo 16 makes a lot of sense. That said, I think if I was set on getting a Duo 16 because of the second screen, I would start with the entry-level model and either slowly replace parts myself, or live with the performance.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 is a hugely powerful gaming laptop with a superb main display and a genuinely useful secondary screen. Yet the design also has some major drawbacks and it’s a very expensive mobile rig. Buy if you really want that second screen, but look elsewhere if it’s not a must have.
