Acer's refreshed Predator Triton 500 SE is a top performer among 16-inch gaming laptops, but there's no daylight between it and lower-priced competitors.

High-end GeForce RTX graphics and an advanced feature set in a trim bod make Acer's Predator Triton 500 a worthy gaming laptop. Just a few modest issues keep it from RTX-laptop alpha status.

Acer’s Predator Triton 500 is a well-equipped gaming laptop we’d actually want to carry around. It’s thin and light for its class, and its Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU will help you forget the mild shortcomings of its 8th-gen Core i7 CPU.

On a first look, the 2020 Predator Triton 500 is merely a hardware bump of the 2019 model, with 10th gen processor, Nvidia Super graphics, and a 300 Hz screen. But it actually improves on a few other aspects, with a slightly revamped keyboard that now offers per-key RGB control, a cleaner exterior design with fewer branding elements, better-optimized performance profiles, and improved thermals. Some of the best thermals in the class, for that matter. However, Acer still needs to price this competitively in order to make it a viable option in its premium segment and make buyers look past its quirks.

The Acer Predator Triton 500 is one of the better value options in its class of 15-inch premium thin-and-light gaming laptops. The excellent performance (once tweaked) and the competitive pricing are its main selling points, alongside the compact form-factor and light-weight, the good quality screen with GSync support, the full-set of ports and the fast keyboard, but there's still room for refinement in the build, keyboard, battery and speakers departments. We get in-depth on all these aspects in the review below.

While the Acer Predator Triton 500 is fairly expensive, it's powerful, easy to transport and runs games at beautifully fast frame rates.

Despite all that, the Triton 500 is significantly more successful in our opinion than the old Triton 700.

The Predator Triton 500 is a beast with a beautiful design. It’s a laptop that can cope with every game I threw at it and maintain ultra settings. And when things got hairy, the overclocking Turbo button took care of the rest. The 300hz IPS panel is a total gamechanger. While I would have preferred a slightly bigger battery and better speakers, I’m not sure I would have traded it for the endlessly sleek chassis.

If you’re looking for a portable gaming laptop that doesn’t pull any punches, the Acer Predator Triton 500 can keep up with the best of them. There are a couple of design flaws that hold it back from the upper end of the pantheon of gaming laptops, but it’s still worth your cash.
